We woke for sunrise over the canyon and had green tea and yogurts on the rim. A ranger came around and exchanged pleasantries and stopped to give us a 20 minute talk when I asked where the best view was. Even though by the end of the day we would be seriously parked-out, he got us excited to come back and do some backwoods hikes in the canyon.
We continued from there south and then east, stopping ever so briefly at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, essentially a drive-by of one gnarly crater, and then on to the Petrified Forest National Park. There we lingered a bit more, but I’m willing to admit I didn’t even get out of the car for the final view.
By the time we got to Albuquerque at 9:30, having given up Santa Fe, I was exhausted and feverish. Nothing a night of sleeping in a bed couldn’t cure.
